It was great to see some new faces on the beach for a big start to the 2022/23 Sunday season.
A big thanks to our water safety team for providing a strong IRB and jet ski presence on the water, precisely coordinated from the beach (go Dani, the ‘temp’).
Over 40 swimmers goggled up and hit the water for the first club swim for the year. This was timed as promised – and as Col briefed us – ‘this handicap system may, or may not work … either way – rain, hail or shine – or all three – we will swim every week!’
Thanks too to Jos Pass for stepping in to help out run the Youth group this season – we are really looking forward to the continued collaboration with Seniors!
Everyone loves a swim … but a 2km run on the first week … really?! Not easily deterred, an enthusiastic 33 competitors backed up from the swim and tore up and back the 500m course, twice, featuring some extremely fast starts and strong performances from the senior crew. Angus & Deano then excelled in a short and sharp board race, helped on by only the smallest nor-east wind runs, and likewise Lisa didn’t look too troubled on her way to the finish line either, only just stopping Ro from performing a clean sweep of the day’s events. The flags arena was packed to finish off the day and saw some great battles over all categories. New guy Tom edged out the bookie’s favourite A Bowles in the gents, which set tongues wagging amongst the crowd.
It was a fun start to the season all, and afterwards it was great to see the Nippers groups going through their paces in preparation for their season too – and would be great to see as many of our youth and seniors crew getting involved with the juniors on Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.
