Parent Pathways
Parent participation is strongly encouraged at Albany Surf Life Saving Club and you don’t necessarily have to be a top swimmer to help out. When kids see their parents helping in and around the club they feel a great sense of belonging and pride. The Albany Surf Life Saving Club has developed a great guide for parents to see all the areas in which they can assist.
Occasional Helper
The Albany Surf Life Saving club is always looking for people to occasionally help with activities and events around the club. There are no special skills or qualifications required for these tasks and your help would be greatly appreciated.
- Sunday morning sausage sizzle
- Friday night club social gatherings (RSA essential)
- Sunday morning Coffee Machine operator and canteen helpers
- Setting up and packing away chairs and tables on Sunday mornings
- Help out on Sunday Club days, away weekends, Carnivals ‘competition’ official – finish line judge, recording results, starting races or marshalling.

Age Group Manager
An Age Group Manager is required for each junior age group on a Sunday Morning and no special skills are required for this role. Like the majority of people in a Surf Life Saving Club our Age Group Manager’s are volunteers, and as they are the leader’s and manager’s of a particular junior age group, it is highly recommended that those parents who take on this role complete an Age Group Managers Course which is 4hrs in duration and includes –
- Risk Assessment and Management
- Duty of Care
- Attendance checklist and monitoring
- Junior Surf Education Awards
An Age Group Manager over the age of 18yrs will be required to fulfil the Member Protection Screening Policy of SLSWA, by completing or either producing evidence of a Police Clearance or Working with Children certification. The cost of both certifications is covered by SLSWA.

Assistant Age Group Manager
All junior age groups require an Age Group Manager to conduct the Sunday morning activities that are available for our juniors during the season. Each Age Group Manager needs support, and an Assistant Age Group Manager is highly valued and much needed in each age group. There are no special skills required for this role. Tasks include:
- Assisting with group management during activities – lining up/organising teams/ organising parent helpers/distributing equipment/setting out beach flags/starter or finish line judge.
- Checking attendance
- Monitoring clothing, towels, goggles etc.
- Recording results
- Providing encouragement and positive support to all children

Water Safety
The safety and care of our nippers and youth in water based activities during Sunday morning activities, club nipper and youth training sessions and competition carnivals is paramount to our club and our organisation. A ratio of 1 Water Safety Officer to 5 Nippers is a pre-requisite for all our water based activities, and with large numbers of nippers this means we require anywhere from 10-20 qualified water safety officers rostered on any given Sunday morning.
To become a qualified Water Safety Officer and assist with nipper, youth and senior activities, patrols, club championships, regional and state carnivals, school water based excursions and/or community events you will need to complete a Nipper rescue Certificate (NRC), or Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) or the higher qualification of the Bronze Medallion. The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is a Patrolling Lifesaver Award which aims to teach and assess: Safety and Well Being; Surf Awareness and Skills; Basic Anatomy and Physiology; Basic Emergency Care; Resuscitation (CPR); Communication; Rescue Techniques; and Patrols. The SRC is also recognised by the Department of Education and Training’s Water Safety Guidelines for supervision of children in both open and closed environments.

Surf Skills Training
If you are interested in developing and improving your surf skills and general fitness then there are several training programs available to suit your level of fitness and skill. Training sessions cater for all ages, and all levels of ability and fitness.

Club Volunteering
Albany Surf Club is always looking for people to volunteer to assist in the effective running of the many different areas of the club.
The Board of Management (BOM) oversee the management of the entire club. These roles are usually undertaken by members who have experience in specific areas such as administration, finance, governance and leadership.
There are a range of operational and leadership roles across all areas of the club in surf sports, education, lifesaving, administration, facility management, social activities and fundraising.
There more the club grow, the greater the demand we have for volunteers to support our operations.

Competition Official
Competition officials work at our State carnivals and assist with the running of the carnival. There are many different tasks that are required at a carnival like marshalling competitors, starting races, recording results, and more.To be eligible to become an official, you will be required to complete a Level 1 Competition Officials Course which is conducted by SLSWA on a yearly basis either in our region or in Perth. Education and Training Awards
Albany SLSC offers education and training awards that will enhance your ability to assist in first aid or resuscitation. These awards range from Patrolling Life Saving awards, First Aid and Resuscitation certificates, to Radio and Power Craft awards. As a financial member of the club these awards are available to you at little or no cost. Please contact Director of Education.
Patrolling Surf Life Saver
Patrolling our beaches and keeping the beach going community safe is our key function, and the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and Bronze Medallion/PUA21004 Certificate 11 in Public Safety (aquatic rescue) are the recognized requirements which enable members to undertake a roster for volunteer Patrol duties; club endorsed external community water safety; internal club junior and senior water safety duties; surf sports competition; and is a pre-requisite for many SLSA awards. The SLSA Bronze Medallion aims to teach and assess members on: surf awareness and surf rescue skills; provide emergency care; communicate in the workplace; work in a team operate communications systems and equipment; participate in an aquatic rescue operation; work effectively in a public safety organisation.
