Member Protection
Albany SLSC is committed to the health, safety and well-being of all its members and is dedicated to providing a safe, fair and inclusive environment for participating in surf lifesaving activities. All clubs affiliated with Surf Life Saving Western Australia are required to nominate and appoint a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) at the commencement of each surf lifesaving season. The MPIO is responsible for the provision of information about a person’s rights, responsibilities and options when an individual is making a complaint or concern. MPIOs are impartial; they do not mediate or investigate complaints, they simply provide information regarding the complaints process. The MPIO is responsible for managing the screening requirements of our Club in compliance with the:
- Surf Life Saving Australia Member Protection Policy
- Surf Life Saving Western Australia Inc. (SLSWA) Member Screening Policy 2008, and the
- Working with Children Check Act 2004.
The SLSA Member Protection Policy conveys a very clear message to all SLSA members, and prospective members, responsible for surf lifesaving activities, particularly those involving members under 18 years of age, about minimising risk exposure of these members.
All SLSA members, particularly the Board, Team Leaders, age group managers, coaches, officials, leaders, trainers and patrol captains have a responsibility to provide safeguards dedicated to the well-being of other members. The abuse of youth members, by other members or external source, is not acceptable and SLSA demands all incidents of such abuse be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities. Where such a protective procedure does not exist SLSA encourages the use of the SLSA Regulation 6.1 – Grievances; and SLSA Regulation 6.2 – Judicial Procedures; for addressing reports, notification or accusations of improper behaviour by an SLSA member. The SLSA Equity Policy also should be referred to when addressing issues relating to harassment of a member by another member or outside source.
Abuse is defined as anything which individuals or organisations do, or fail to do, that directly or indirectly harms people or damages their prospects of a safe and healthy development. This includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, inappropriate training, inappropriate touching, sexual abuse and neglect. (National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, 2000).
