Woodside Nippers: Great Southern Regional Championships

Congratulations to all of our ASLSC Woodside Nippers who travelled to Denmark on Saturday for the 2024 Great Southern Regional Qualifier.

Thank you to Denmark SLSC for hosting a fabulous event, and to Esperance-Goldfields SLSC for travelling all the way west to compete with us at Ocean Beach.

Nearly 50 ASLSC Woodside Nipper members from U6 and U7 to U13 age groups participated in beach and surf events. For our U10 to U13 Nippers this carnival is a chance to qualify for the State Champs in Perth at the end of the season. Beach events required competitors and their supporters to cross the Wilson Inlet, although the sprint and flag arenas were worth the waist-deep-wade! Albany’s Fergus Stephens and Spurge did an amazing job of officiating the flag arenas.

Challenging ocean conditions greeted our competitors in the water arenas, with rips, sandbanks, currents and big sets. Our U8 and U9’s had a tough time in water arena 2, but all emerged smiling, some having been delivered to shore on the jet ski. In water arena 1 the string line appeared to be miles out, but our nippers faced the challenge head on. Greg (U11’s AGM) swam the string line after the event and conceded it was tough! Thank you to Celia and Carl who officiated and assisted in the water arenas.

A huge thank you to our Woodside Nipper families for bringing the kids to the carnival, to our President Carl, Surf Sports Captain Nick, our water safety team and officials’ team for making sure the carnival was a great experience. A special thank you to Kellie Loverock and her team who took charge of the U6 and U7s, and our age group managers for their support and guidance in the arenas. All of the competitors benefited from your experience and wise words.

A full list of finishing places will be available shortly.
