T.O.A.D. (Teamwork, Opportunities and Development) Camp is a development program open to U14 & U15 youth members. The camp is designed to expose participants to a variety of skills and activities that will enhance and encourage their development within our organisation. This year it was held in the SLSWA Development Centre in Margaret River and a few of our clubbies had the opportunity to attend.
William Schupp clubbie shares his experience...
We arrived at the South West Development Centre (SWDC) with our hopes high. We were all excited for the week that was TOAD. Monday was mostly a get to know you day. We had an amazing dinner of pasta, salad, and choc brownies with ice cream. We then did our Radio Operators Certificate theory.
Tuesday was great with coasteering and a beach day. Costeering (which is when you climb along rocks and then jump off said rocks), was an amazing experience. The sun was beating down on the SWDC as we prepared for our Skits. That night we were joined by two new members of the SLSWA board, as well as representatives of the Scottish Masonic Charitable Foundation of WA (SMCFWA). Dinner that evening was roast chicken, roast vegetables, and apple crumble with custard. That night was our Radio Operators Certificate Practical.
Wednesday began with our team sports competition. We competed against other teams to gain the most points in teamwork activities. Then we set off to Dunsborough and Next Level Monkey Business. Now, I’m not a big fan of heights, but Next Level Monkey Business was quite fun. When we got home, we packed and had our dinner which was lasagne, salad, and sticky date pudding with ice cream. That night we presented our skits. My group (Team 2) came last in the skit competition, but we won the previously mentioned activity competition.
TOAD was a great experience. Thanks to SLSWA for organising the event. To the SMCFWA, for sponsoring this camp, Rise Up, and SLSWA youth. To Dave, Maddie, and Charlie for organising the camp. To Ian, Sheridan, Daniel, and Kate for volunteering your time to take us on this camp. To Team 2 (especially Kate, our group leader) for all the memories we made. To Stirling, Ash, Elliot, Byron, Kaden, Lucas, and Angus (Dorm 3), for keeping me up every night. Finally, to everyone at ASLSC for giving me the opportunity to do this camp. Thank you.
