Albany SLSC Ironman athlete Jason Bresanello has hit the podium at the Coolangatta Gold short course event in Coolangatta QLD, Saturday 15 October, taking out third place in the 30-39yr category. Congratulations Jason!
Battling big surf, steady winds and strong currents, Jason managed to complete the solo ironman course in a highly competitive time of 2:54:21, all off a limited training base we hear! The race is not for the faint hearted at a 10.5km surf ski, 2km swim, 3km board paddle and 5.5km run in a continuous effort, and the famously carnage-causing east coast surf conditions. Ouch.
Jason was ably supported by wife Rachel, who needed every bit of her board paddling experience it seemed to navigate the break and accompany the swim course, and of course her famous running prowess to deliver drinks and support on the final run leg.
From all reports the surf ski leg had Jason in a great overall position after successfully navigating multiple large breaks, and after battling a long windy return from the turn in draft formation, managed to score a good ride in with the fellow leaders of the 4th race wave for the day.
After surviving some close encounters with the Coologatta rocks courtesy of some big dumping waves and a sweeping side current, the swim leg was transitioned to the board paddle from a strategically relocated starting point up the beach, where some lead changes took place and again saw Jason land a wave in to shore to commence the run. A quick start followed before the hard work of the water legs finally started to take its toll, and only a razzle and full water bottle from Rachel was enough to spark a much needed recovery and strong finish to the line.
Great work Jason, doing Albany proud.
See everyone at Ironman training next Saturday morning!
