On Sunday, Albany sent a boat crew off to Secret Harbour for another round of the ASRL Navy Series.

The Fat Gannets teamed up with the ever capable sweep – Byron Bird for a 3 round comp followed by a final in interesting conditions.

With a pleasant starting swell, sand bar and SW breeze at approx. 15knots at 7am, it was going to be a day of challanges and change. The Fat Gannets had 11 crews in the women’s reserve, they managed to place 1,2,1 in all their heats, and were able to make the final. The conditions had  changed considerably with the wind ramping up to 20+ knots at this stage, and the Sandbar dictating how the waves sat up, skills were tested by all crews in getting out catching skates home and that final ride pass the finish line.

Several crews through the day lost sweeps, crew members, turned boats, or broke oars, NOT the Fat Gannets! With Byron’s surf skills and great timing, the team were able to punch through and catch some great waves home finishing a very respectable 2nd to City of Perth.

Many thanks go out to the Club for your support on the day and to our helpers on the beach shifting the boat around. These are really well run and fun events and we encourage everyone to have a go, it’s a great way to build confidence, work on skills and meet people from other clubs.

Until the next round lets keep on rowing.
