Redevelopment Project
Background
ASLSC is a much loved and respected member of the local community since 1917 and central to the safe ongoing enjoyment of Middleton Beach and the south coast of Western Australia by locals and visitors from around Australia and the world. ASLSC provides a highly valued community service for Albany and the Great Southern in the fields of lifesaving, first aid, emergency response, education and training, and intergenerational sport and recreation.
With the support of long term planning, design and infrastructure in Middleton Beach provided by all levels of government led by City of Albany, ASLSC has undertaken a review of its own vision for the future, and capacity to meet current and future community demand.
Further to this review a proposed clubhouse expansion concept has been identified which would significantly improve the safety, efficiency and capacity of service delivery, and create new platforms for stronger links to the broader and beach going communities.
Redevelopment Project
The expansion project is of high strategic importance to the ASLSC with the support of its rapidly growing membership base. ASLSC looks forward to continuing to work with the local community, City of Albany, and both state and federal governments to deliver the highest standard of community service, and to make the club redevelopment vision become a reality.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of the redevelopment concept is to:
- Improve the safety, function and efficiency of core delivery spheres – lifesaving, emergency services, training and education, surf sports and competition
- Make the club more accessible and connected to the community
- Help CoA meet current community demand at Middleton Beach and build capacity for future growth and development
SCOPE
The proposed alterations to the building will overall create a safer, more efficient and welcoming community facility with greater capacity to benefit a wider range of the community through new and improved access to facilities, improved lifesaving and water safety operations, and new training and education spaces.
TIMING
Commencement of the work has been significantly delayed. Construction has now commenced in February 2024 with completion expected to be towards to end of 2024. During construction, the ASLSC building will not be available for use by community user groups. The adjacent public toilets and footpaths may also be unavailable for a short period of time during construction. Temporary facilities will be provided. The community be regularly updated with progress and disruption notices during construction period.
ALIGNMENT
The expansion concept is consistent with key improvements to beach access and amenities currently being delivered by the Middleton Beach Foreshore Enhancement project, led by City of Albany with the support of the Australian Govt Building Better Regions Funding, and Development WA (LandCorp).
