Albany SLSC were fortunate to have two very deserving youth members selected to attend the SLSWA Rise Up Camp for 2021 at Point Peron.

Many thanks again to John and Jan Inglis for their ongoing support for youth development programs for our young members.

Here is what our participants had to say:

On Monday the 20th of December until Thursday the 23rd of December, Sude and I participated in the Rise Up Camp. Rise Up camp is part of the youth development camps. It is open to u17s. This camp provides an opportunity for members to participate in a wide range of physical and social activities that will develop personal leadership skills. Whilst at the camp, we developed many new skills and friendships that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

During the first day we completed our ARTC (Advanced Resuscitation Certificate) and participated in a range of team games. On the second and third day we were split into different groups and rotated around different activities. These inlcuded canoeing, sup boarding, snorkelling and raft building. We also did bike riding, archery, abseiling and crate climbing (which was a favourite for every one). During the afternoons we were given a large amount of free time which was either spent socialising in the dorms, playing beach volleyball or playing basketball.

The camp helped me meet people from other clubs and discuss what they do and see the different things that each club does. I have made life long friendships that I look forward to seeing at carnivals.

I’d like to thank everyone who made the camps possible and encourage anyone who is wanting to come next year to put their names down!

Rise Up Camp!

In my personal experience, Rise Up is not only a camp for fostering leadership skills in its participants. It is also a great way to learn about the other clubs in WA, and about how they operate, from firsthand accounts. The difference between how larger clubs like Scarborough and Cottesloe work, compared to our own, is quite interesting.

A well-structured camp. We all had many avenues to bond and interact, namely through numerous activities that were held throughout. Activities included biking, archery, SUPing, Kayaking, Snorkeling and my personal favorites crate climbing and raft building, as they involved the most teamwork, and really pushed our leadership skills. At the end of the day, we would all eat our fill with a tasty dinner, after a long day of activities.

Making friends with people all over WA was the highlight experience, as we all shared the love for the sand and surf. I will remember the times playing beach volleyball with everyone fondly.
