Congratulations Rowers!

Big congrats to our awesome rowers!

Albany had three crews successfully compete in last weekend’s boat carnival at Scarborough Beach. It was a beautiful morning with warm conditions and flat water for the early morning, but the sea breeze came in early and strong. The conditions were certainly challenging by the late heats and the final with crews having to contend with a stiff breeze and growing chop.

Albany had mixed age men’s crew entered in B division, and in the Female B division the Fat Gannets and Albany Penguins flew the flag.  With an early change in time to 7am, crews were assembling on the beach sorting boats, setting shelters and warming up from 6am onwards.

The Penguins were the first team to “go on the gun” finishing a brave second in the U19’s, from there they then had to also compete in the B div with the Fat Gannets. The Fat Gannets managed to place in all their heats and make the final, however the Penguins were unable to replicate their earlier success and supported the Fat Gannets from the beach as they worked hard and caught a wave home to win the final.

Meanwhile the Albany boys, with a mix of youth and experience, placed in all their heats and had a comfortable win in their final. Byron and Pete did an amazing job sweeping crews and making sure all boats were on the correct cans prior to each race. Moving boats from one can to another can be challenging at the best of times, however having fellow crew members to constantly assist with moving boats, holding the boat at the end of a race is fantastic.

This is what being in a club is all about, supporting each other on the beach, during a race and back under the shelter. Carnivals are also a great opportunity to catch up with friends who have moved on to other clubs….we know the U/19 crew were super excited to catch up with Soph!

For a small club like Albany to have 3 boats in a ARSL series is fantastic, we even got a shout out at the presentations from the organisers. All Albany boaties put in a great effort on the day, and the talk is now all about January 9th at Secret Harbour….  Who’s keen?

Masters women ‘Fat Gannets’: Dani, Alex, Chris and Trish

Masters men: Pete, Matt, Fergus and Willem

U19 women ‘The Penguins’: Devon, Hannah, Zoe and Bree.

Thanks to the crew and Dora for the awesome snaps!
