Team Albany had a fabulous night celebrating the 2021 SLSWA Awards of Excellence in the Grand Ballroom at Crown. It was a big night and we are so very proud to see two of our AMAZING members recognised for their outstanding contributions to surf lifesaving in Western Australia.
Enormous congratulations to:
JEFF MEDCALF – SLSWA Assessor of the Year
Presented for outstanding contribution and commitment towards the area of assessment within surf life saving.
For the past 21 years, Jeff has immersed himself in delivering the highest quality of education, training and assessing to surf lifesavers at Albany Surf Life Saving Club.
This season, Jeff led the Albany SLSC Education Team and was often involved in the assessment of the more than 400 new awards and skills maintenance for Surf Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion and Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Driver achieved.
He also coordinated a team of trainers and assessors to complete 48 assessment activities for Albany Surf Life Saving Club and two for Denmark.
BYRON BIRD – SLSWA Support Operations Volunteer of the Year
Presented for outstanding contribution to the delivery and development of surf lifesaving frontline service while part of the SLSWA Support Operations groups ( Westac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter: Westfarmers Lifesaver Jet Ski Teams: Drone Patrol: Peer Support: Abalone Patrol).
Byron is a key member of the Wesfarmers Emergency Response Team based out of Albany Surf Life Saving Club.
Demonstrating a willingness to be involved in a number of key marine search and rescue responses this year, Byron works openly and collaboratively with others in the great southern region, within Surf Life Saving WA, and external agencies to get the best possible outcomes in often very challenging situations.
Special commendation was also given to Damian Newbold from Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club and the Wesfarmers Emergency Response Team based out of Esperance Surf Life Saving Club for their commitment to the Jet Ski Program.
